Dynamics 365 Business Central Tip - Enter a Journal Transaction

Posted by Tom Rogers on March 9, 2020

One of the benefits of using Microsoft Dynamics 365 Business Central is the ease of use to do common tasks. In this post will take a look at how to enter a journal transaction, using the simple look-up features.

To enter a journal transaction, you first will want to click on the Finance tab, then navigate to General Journals (tip: if you are not sure how to find this, view the video below). Alternately, you can go to the search menu and type as much of the word as you wish. For instance, if you simply type in "general jour" you will then be taken to the General Journals section.

The first thing you will see is a list of all General journal Batches. This can be sorted in a variety of ways, depending how it was set up. Let’s say you want to move money from a checking account to Money Market account. The first step would be to select the batch where this is to be recorded. You then enter in the GL account for checking. You actually type the account number in, or you could actually type the word "checking". You then select “checking account” from the drop down and enter in the amount. You then will navigate to the required offset account, which in this scenario would be the money market account you are transferring to. You also could enter a separate line item. One would be for checking, one would be for the money market side of the transaction. You typically will find, however, that it is easier to enter in one line item with a balancing account being your offset. Once you're finished, simply hit post, and you will have moved $50 between checking and your money market account.
