Dynamics 365 Business Central Tip - Import a Journal Transaction

Posted by Tom Rogers on March 24, 2020

In this post, we will discuss you how to do an import into the general ledger in Dynamics 365 Business Central, using the Edit in Excel function. The first thing you will want to do is go into finance and general journals, then select the template you want to use.

Let say you need to import a payroll transaction. You will enter a salary expense, a payroll tax expense, and federal withholdings that need to come out of your checking account. From there, with one click, an option will appear to let you edit in Excel. The information you have entered will be pulled into an Excel file, which then can be edited and published back to Business Central. This method will allow you to see what columns still need to be filled in.

Once you have your import file in Excel, you can simply hit publish. If you go back to your journal batch, you will see notice that the information has published with any new items added from Excel.

In the video below, we show you an example of how this works, how you can copy a line, and paste that last line in, then publish this back into Business Central. This functionality required the latest version of Excel, which is included with an Office 365 subscription.
